Twisters, the sequel to the 1996 disaster epic Twister, will follow a new story and cast of characters but promises to bring back some of that good, old dusty action. As its title suggests, the original film is set against a severe outbreak of dust storms and tornadoes in Oklahoma. Arriving at the scene is a team of passionate storm chasers who wish to deploy a research device. With its technical aspects earning immense praise, Twister also earned Oscar nominations for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound.
The Twister sequel was greenlit after more than two decades since the original 1997 release. The earliest plans for Twisters materialized in 2020 with Universal Pictures talking to Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick) about directing. A year later, Helen Hunt volunteered to write and direct the sequel. However, these plans were later shelved when a legacy sequel was planned instead with Mark L. Smith (The Revenant) serving as its writer. Hoping to capitalize on the success of the cult classic, Twisters could be a modern disaster epic.

Twisters Story Details
What Will Happen?
Billed as more of a legacy sequel than an actual follow-up, little is known about the exact plot details for Twisters, though the trailer has shined a light on a few specifics. Daisy Edgar-Jones’ Kate is rumored to be the daughter of Helen Hunt’s Jo, but no details have been revealed that confirm that speculation. Instead, it is known that Kate is a researcher who, after a harrowing experience with a tornado, aims to further Jo’s research from the first film.
She’ll enlist the help of Glen Powell’s hot-shot storm chaser, Tyler, and together they’ll attempt to recreate the Dorothy experiments seen in the classic 1996 disaster film. While more details are expected as the movie’s release date draws closer, the basic premise of Twisters won’t be all that different from its predecessor.
The First Look At The New Disaster Film
Released during the Super Bowl, the first trailer for Twisters quickly makes good on the film’s ambitious title. The two-minute tease opens with Kate (Edgar-Jones) and Javi (Anthony Ramos) as they come face to face with the full force of a deadly tornado. This experience traumatizes Kate but eventually inspires her to continue the research that was started by Dr. Jo Harding in the 1996 original. The trailer introduces Glen Powell’s Tyler, while also revealing the twin tornadoes which give Twisters its terrifying name.
A follow-up to the 1996 original film Twister, Twisters is a sequel set years after the original, said to be fast-tracked by Steven Spielberg and Mark L. Smith, with Frank Marshal as producer. Little details exist about the film, but Helen Hunt is expected to reprise her role as Jo, with the film likely to pay homage to the late Bill Paxton.
