Move over Dave Chappelle; Hannah Gadsby is bringing a new lineup of genderqueer comedians to Netflix!
Gender Agenda shines the spotlight on “seven emerging voices” from the comedy scene — ALOK, Asha Ward, Chloe Petts, DeAnne Smith, Jes Tom, Krishna Istha, and Mx. Dahlia Belle.
“The last time Netflix brought this many trans people together, it was for a protest,” Gadsby says in the recently released trailer. “So, progress.”
Despite being described as “emerging,” the work of these talented comedians may already be familiar to many in the LGBTQ+ community. ALOK has been featured in Planet Sex, Getting Curious, and Random Acts of Flyness, Ward is a writer for Saturday Night Live, Petts founded a queer comedy collective in London called The Lol Word, Smith starred in Comedians of the World for Netflix, Tom wrote for Our Flag Means Death, Istha wrote on Sex Education, and Belle founded the Portland Queer Comedy Festival.
The special comes as a result of Gadsby’s multi-title deal they inked with Netflix back in 2022, which also included last year’s Something Special, centering around Gadsby’s marriage to Jenney Shamash.
And creating a special that highlighted other LGBTQ+ talent was in the cards from the jump.
“In an effort to further open a door that I had to fight to get through myself, I will curate and host a line-up show on Netflix featuring six new, gender-diverse comedians,” Gadsby said at the time. “In a notoriously transphobic industry, I am looking to broaden the scope of opportunities for genderqueer performers from around the globe, as well as expand the diversity of offerings to audiences on one of comedy‘s biggest platforms.”
Gender Agenda is scheduled to hit Netflix on March 5.
