It seemed unlikely that Netflix’s Griselda, the story of a drug kingpin played by Sofia Vergara would have quite this much staying power, but after over two weeks on top of Netflix’s Top 10 list, the queen has fallen. It has slipped to #2, passed up by non-Netflix original, The Tourist, which has been hovering inside the top 3 for a while now.
The Tourist is originally a BBC series, which Netflix has licensed to great success, it seems. It stars Jamie Dornan of 50 Shades of Grey fame (I am positive he hates that connection at this point) as a car crash victim who wakes up with amnesia in Australia. Given the unique licensing here, there’s no waiting around for a second season to be approved. It was already renewed way back in March of 2022, aired on the BBC already, and season 2 is coming to Netflix at the end of this month. It’s also unique in that this was one of many shows dropped by Max as it cuts costs, and picked up by Netflix instead.
Both The Tourist and Griselda are rated really highly, which frankly, is somewhat unusual for top Netflix shows. Griselda has an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, and The Tourist has a 94%. Genuinely impressive and one of the highest new shows currently airing. I have actually now convinced myself to watch it as I have been writing this article. I guess it’s really good!
The rest of the list has other fixtures that have been there for a while. Crime documentary American Nightmare is proving to be one of Netflix’s most successful, still #3 after weeks on the service. #4 is Young Sheldon, another licensing adventure. #5 is new show One Day, a romantic drama based on a book. #6 is Alexander, a documentary about the famed conqueror that has been accused of being “woke” as he is show to be romantically involved with a man despite this…being very much in line with the real Alexander.
Something called Rael: The Alien Prophet is at #7, a docuseries about a UFO-based cult in the ‘70s. #8 is Love on the Spectrum and #9 is My Wife and Kids. #10 is Fool Me Once, the Harlan Coben show that was the show before Griselda ruling the Top 10 list for a number of weeks. That had a really, really great run, and Coben has more shows coming down the line.
As for the top two, Griselda is not getting a second season as it was not designed for one. The Tourist is, and has the unique situation of airing it just a few weeks after Netflix viewers are discovering season 1 for the first time.
