The A Quiet Place: Day One prequel spinoff from John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place sci-fi horror franchise has a hugely talented cast filled with beloved actors in the roles of its main characters. Both A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place Part II were acclaimed for their stellar performances and flawless technical elements. It’s no wonder that the next movie in the Quiet Place franchise, directed by Michael Sarnoski, has attracted similarly high-caliber actors to its cast.

While the mainline installments of the franchise will continue with another direct sequel later, AQuiet Place: Day One’s story introduces new characters and follows another storyline from the beginning. As its title implies, A Quiet Place: Day One is a prequel, taking place when the alien creatures first arrive and proceed to wreak havoc on an apocalyptic level. The movie will be connected to the other Quiet Place movies through some overlapping characters, but it will mostly be its own thing, as the trailer for A Quiet Place: Day One shows. Here’s a guide to the new and returning characters in A Quiet Place: Day One, who plays them in the cast, and what else the actors are known for.

Lupita Nyong’o as Sam

Nyong’o’s Sam is the protagonist of the movie.

Actor: Lupita Nyong’o, 40, is a Mexican-Kenyan actress. She was born in Mexico City, but her family moved to Kenya when she was three years old. She traveled back to the United States to study acting and theater at Hampshire College and had a few small acting gigs in the U.S. and Kenya before attending Yale School of Drama. Nyong’o’s breakout role was her feature film debut as Patsey in Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave (2013). It earned her her first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Since then, she’s gone on to become one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed actresses.

Notable Movies & TV Shows: 12 Years a Slave (2013), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2016), The Jungle Book (2016), Queen of Katwe (2015), Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017), Black Panther (2018), Us (2019), Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019), Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)

Character: In A Quiet Place: Day One, Lupita Nyong’o’s character, Sam, is on a day trip to NYC with her cat, Frodo, when the aliens arrive and everything turns into a nightmare. Nyong’o was among the first members of A Quiet Place: Day One’s cast to be announced, and her involvement immediately sparked interest in the movie, both because of the amazing performances that she’s delivered in the past, and also because she’s famously very picky with the projects that she takes on.

Alex Wolff as Unnamed Character

It’s not yet clear what Alex Wolff’s role will be.

An injured Alex Wolff in Hereditary

Actor: Alex Wolff, 26, is an American actor and musician, best known for his role as tortured son Peter in Ari Aster’s breakout 2018 horror movie Hereditary. Wolff has been an entertainer from a young age. Born in Manhattan, New York to an actress mother and jazz musician father, Wolff made his debut at age 6 in the Nickelodeon project The Naked Brothers Band: The Movie. He’s continued acting and playing music since. He made his directorial debut in 2019 with The Cat and the Moon, a feature he wrote and in which he also starred.

Character: Alex Wolff’s involvement in A Quiet Place: Day One reunites him director Michael Sarnoski, who he worked with on the movie Pig. Both Wolff and Sarnoski have been incredibly tight-lipped about who Wolff is playing or how his character fits into the narrative of A Quiet Place: Day One since his casting announcement in January 2023. Even with the trailer out, the name of his character hasn’t even been revealed.

Joseph Quinn as Eric

Quinn plays a businessman who gets caught up in the madness in NYC.

After Emanuel, he went on to study drama at London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. Since 2015, he’s acted in British projects and theater in London, being named Screen International’s Star of Tomorrow in 2018. That same year, he made his feature film debut in Overlord. Since his turn in Stranger Things, he’s been a sought-after talent in Hollywood.

Character: In A Quiet Place: Day One, Joseph Quinn plays a man named Eric. His character is the deuteragonist to Nyongo’s protagonist, a businessman who reluctantly teams up with Sam as the two attempt to navigate their quiet new reality in the suddenly silent NYC and survive. His casting was announced with Nyong’o’s in November 2022. “The script is obviously set in the world that we know, but it’s very much a film about these two characters who are lost and trying to negotiate their fates,” he said in a February 2024 interview with EW.

Actor: Djimon Hounsou, 59, was born in Cotonou, Benin (formerly the Republic of Dahomey). At age 12, he and his brother emigrated to Lyon, France, where he dropped out of school and was briefly homeless. He was later introduced to fashion designer Thierry Mugler, who pushed Hounsou to pursue a modeling career. Hounsou moved to the United States in 1990, with his feature breakout role coming in 1997 with his turn as Joseph Cinqué in Steven Spielberg’s Amistad. Since then, he’s acted steadily across genres in both movies and TV. In 2009, his son Kenzo Lee Hounsou was born to Hounsou and his then-partner, Kimora Lee Simmons.

Fury of the Gods (2022), Gran Turismo (2023), Rebel Moon (2023), Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver (2024).

Character: Djimon Hounsou returns to the Quiet Place franchise by reprising his role in A Quiet Place: Day One. In A Quiet Place Part II, Hounsou plays an unnamed character, known only as the Man on Island, who makes contact with the Abbott family and leads them to a secluded, seemingly danger-free island. Though not much is known about his character, the trailer suggests he adapts faster than most in NYC, and that A Quiet Place: Day One will serve as his origin story.

Will The Original Cast Return?

It’s not yet known whether or not the original Abbott family will be part of it.

It hasn’t yet been announced whether any members of the original A Quiet Place, namely, John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, will be returning for the prequel spinoff, but it’s definitely possible. Those characters were certainly around at the same time as this movie’s story is taking place, but the fact that they’re so isolated and alone makes things a little more difficult. The complete timeline of A Quiet Place is complicated, but there are certainly moments when members of the Abbott Family could interact with these new characters, making room for cameos from John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, and/or Noah Jupe in A Quiet Place: Day One.
